This initiative provides student composers an opportunity to work with a professional ensemble, culminating in a public performance. After an initial reading in January, students were able to edit their works. On April 10, we will rehearse them and you are invited into the process. Final performance will be April 26.

Demanding Change
Music for piano and strings + World Premiere.

t’s time for our art form to reflect our community, which means just as much music by women as men and by people with diverse backgrounds and stories. No longer should a program of music by women be unusual, and this program features some of the best music you’ve never heard. Pulitzer Prize winner Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s commanding and feisty Piano Quintet and Florence Price’s soulful and elegant Quartet in G will leave you wanting more from these two extraordinary women. We are thrilled commission Stephanie Berg again to add to the canon of great contemporary music.

New Encounters
Music for lots of winds & strings + World Premiere

New encounters with determined artistry. Sometimes a great piece ends up in the Lost and Found of history, and this program features two of the greatest to be found, along with a commission by a new resident of St. Louis, Darwin Aquino. Coleridge-Taylor, whose mother was English and his father of African-American heritage, was one of the brightest rising starts of Europe when he died young. Louise Farrenc demanded to be paid as much as her male peers when her Nonet rocketed her to fame, but fell back into obscurity after her death. Her music is rightfully regaining the recognition it deserves.

Generational Disruption
Music for strings and clarinet + a World Premiere.

The word “millennial” can sometimes get a bad rap. Well, we are here to look at the good side of this controversial group. Some of the most magical works in history have been written by generations determined to shift the conversation or simply create gorgeous music.  Whether you find inspirations from a Valencia orange or a masterwork by Mozart, we will explore what happens when new viewpoints disrupt the status quo.

Retakes, revisions, and remixes
Music for flute, harp and strings.

Retakes, revisions and remixes: Chamber Project St. Louis will present the chamber music of Piazzolla, Ravel, Sibelius and Bunch featuring flute, violin, violas, cello and harp. Sibelius finesses the music of his early years, Kenji Bunch takes inspiration from Americana transcending cultural barriers, and Ravel is remixed to include the harp creating a new sound. All of this just proves sometimes a little change can be good!
