Featuring Syrhea Conaway's SILVER LININGS @ The Contemporary Art Museum

We return to the Contemporary Art Museum with composer and multi-faceted performer Syrhea Conaway to perform in person for the first time SILVER LININGS, which we premiered virtually in early 2021, along with brand new music by her to finish up a project that spans the tumultuous past two years. Balancing the program is the legendary lucious Clarinet Quintet by Johannes Brahms, a work he came out of retirement to compose.

HIDDEN: Secrets kept, charms revealed

What lies beneath the surface may surprise you. In this program we explore composers and music that reveal layers of complexity and skill that may not be apparent without deeper listening. Jean Emil Cras studied composition with the great French masters of the 20th century, although he spent most of his time on a ship, inventing navigation devices. Dohnanyi stood his ground against accusations from all sides in Hungary during the Holocaust, his secrets revealed only after he is buried in Florida decades later. Allison Loggins-Hull reveals new layers of possibility for how music can be created in her work for solo flute.

Musical terms:

Ernst von Dohnányi
Serenade in C for String Trio

Marcia - March - a bold opening to a large piece.
Romanza - Romance - typically slow
Scherzo - Italian for “joke” - typically very fast and in “three’ feel
Tema con variazioni - Theme and Variation
Rondo (Finale) - Rondo is a form where the melody is repeated with new material between it each time. ABACABA is a typical Rondo form, although there are many versions. Often fast and used at the end of a large work.

Serenades traditionally have more than the standard four movements, this one has five, but they can also have six. This one adds a theme and variation to the standard four movement structure of fast/slow/dance related/fastest.

Jean Emil Cras
Quintet for harp, flute, string Trio

Assez animé - sufficiently fast/lively
Animé - lively/fast
Assez lent sans traîner - slowly without dragging
Très animé - very fast

This is a typical four movement layout for a large work with the fast/dance related/slow/very fast structure.

CONFLUENCE @ The 560 Music Center

CONFLUENCE: IMAGINATION MEETS INNOVATION

This program is inspired by our city and the geography that has influenced this region of the world. The "Mighty Mississippi" and the “Big Muddy” Missouri rivers join in a confluence just to the north of modern day St. Louis, creating a historic meeting and trading community sharing cultures and ideas. Celebrating this spirit, the music in this program melds equally rich ideas coming together to shape a new sound.

William Grant Still combines sounds from Africa with the European classical tradition to create music uniquely American in Ennanga. St. Louis composer Kim Portnoy playfully manipulates the tunefulness of musical theater into a traditional violin sonata in From an Imaginary Musical. Martinů, decades earlier, successfully blends jazz with his Bohemian roots in Chamber Music No. 1. Missouri native, Shelley Washington brings us all closer to home in her string quartet, Middleground.
