HIDDEN: Secrets kept, charms revealed

What lies beneath the surface may surprise you. In this program we explore composers and music that reveal layers of complexity and skill that may not be apparent without deeper listening. Jean Emil Cras studied composition with the great French masters of the 20th century, although he spent most of his time on a ship, inventing navigation devices. Dohnányi stood his ground against accusations from all sides in Hungary during the Holocaust, his secrets revealed only after he is buried in Florida decades later. Allison Loggins-Hull reveals new layers of possibility for how music can be created in her work for solo flute.

Musical terms:

Ernst von Dohnányi
Serenade in C for String Trio

Marcia - March - a bold opening to a large piece.
Romanza - Romance - typically slow
Scherzo - Italian for “joke” - typically very fast and in “three’ feel
Tema con variazioni - Theme and Variation
Rondo (Finale) - Rondo is a form where the melody is repeated with new material between it each time. ABACABA is a typical Rondo form, although there are many versions. Often fast and used at the end of a large work.

Serenades traditionally have more than the standard four movements, this one has five, but they can also have six. This one adds a theme and variation to the standard four movement structure of fast/slow/dance related/fastest.

Jean Emil Cras
Quintet for harp, flute, string Trio

Assez animé - sufficiently fast/lively
Animé - lively/fast
Assez lent sans traîner - slowly without dragging
Très animé - very fast

This is a typical four movement layout for a large work with the fast/dance related/slow/very fast structure.
